Woodburner's summer festival with explosive improvisers Agile Experiments, live/electronic drummer Chiminyo and Ugandan kora player Seby Ntege..
AGILE EXPERIMENTS
Agile Experiments is a communal project born out of experimenting with two ideas:
1. To create new music of a completely collaborative nature via the un-questionable and un-revocable application of improvisation.
2. To bring this music to locations where audiences were likely to have never heard anything like it before.
The project began unassumingly in 2015 as members of the London music scene gathered to experiment under the casual guidance of Dave De Rose.
A series of gigs at The Agile Rabbit pizzeria in Brixton Village identified a series of combos that eventually gathered for eight one-hour sessions in a DIY studio space in Camberwell, London. This unintentionally formed a collective.
In 2018 thirteen cuts from these sessions were compiled on to two vinyl releases (Agile Experiments vol.1 & 2). This powerful underground collection of music caught the attention of the British Library's “Sound Archives” project that requested to store them on file in order represent the nation's cultural achievements. In 2019 another two LPs were released. The third LP featured further cuts from the original sessions alongside new extracts captured during live performances in London venues (London - The Ultimate Guide of Avant-Garde-Step - sides A & B). For the 4th LP Dave De Rose embarked on a mission to Athens in order to recruit, perform and capture a fresh new sound using Greek musicians.
By the first half of 2020 Agile Experiments has given birth to two more unique sounding LPs: 'Alive in the Empire' (March) featuring cuts from a one off performance featuring John Edwards, George Crowley, Dan Nicholls & Dave De Rose for the London Jazz Festival at The Empire Bar. 'Tiatoma' (June) featuring Saber Rider & Dimitris Foken in trio with Dave, a formation that had participated to the Athens LP but amassed further and substantial amounts of quality music.
Presented in a rogue, hand-written, white label vinyl format, these collectable records have so far shipped all over the world to New Zeland, Hong Kong, Russia, the U.S.A., Canada, Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Thailand, Greece, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, China, Italy & Japan as well as all over the UK.
CHIMINYO
Chiminyo is a drummer and producer based in North London who combines the raw, immediate live sound of percussion and the futuristic timbres of his electronic productions to create his own, daring soundworld. Via laboriously self-coded software, each cymbal crash and drum hit triggers a synth or sample, allowing Chiminyo complete control and freeing him of all loops, click-tracks and backing tracks.
As well as his own solo project, Chiminyo performs and records with some of the leading figures of London’s music scene, including spiritual jazz-leaning outfit Maisha and psychedelic energy bomb Cykada. He has also collaborated and recorded with Gary Bartz, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Theon Cross, and Zara McFarlane. The drummer, who through his craft uses a range of technological equipment, is also sponsored by Roland and Bosphorus, as well as being an Ableton artist.
The up-and-coming musician released a debut EP last year entitled ‘I Am Chiminyo’, a visceral introduction to his all-encompassing universe. Described by Clash magazine as “a startingly inventive percussive workout”, the three tracks flow through a cascade of ethereal arpeggios, thumping basslines, and heavy, dance-inducing beats. Critically-acclaimed by the likes of Gilles Peterson, BBC 1Xtra and Jazz FM, it indirectly earnt Chiminyo a Jazz FM Digital Award nomination whilst the track ‘Kandy Lanx’ was nominated for a 2020 Worldwide FM Award.
SEBY NTEGE
Seby Ntege is a uniquely charismatic singer and songwriter from the Busoga region of eastern Uganda renowned for producing some of East Africa's best multi-instrumentalists and is himself a master of half a dozen folkloric instruments, including the akogo thumb piano, endongo lyre, adungu harp, and the one stringed fiddle called endingidi.Born into a musical household Seby joined the family band Nile Beat Artists aged 13, introducing him early to the international stage and touring neighbouring African countries as an instrumentalist and dancer.
Relocating to London in his twenties Seby quickly gained respect as an ambassador of traditional Ugandan music, whilst his musical curiosity soon led to fruitful collaborations with various celebrated artists notably acclaimed Gambian Kora player Sona Jobarteh. In 2018 gathering a multicultural band around him, Seby distilled this journey into a highly autobiographical album that would showcase his virtuosity as a musician.
Described by Seby as “a musical memoir of 15 years of living in the UK” the album Five Notes relates all that Seby has learnt - the five notes of the album's title referencing both the five note pentatonic scale in which Ugandan instruments are tuned, and the autobiographical content of the songs. Picked up by A World In London's DJ Ritu and championed by BBC Radio 3's Max Reinhardt via BBC Introducing, Five Notes received praise on BBC World Service, Resonance FM and BBC London, leading to live appearances at WOMAD and Latitude festivals and a 10 date UK tour supported by Arts Council England. Seby’s current band features guitarist Ben Avison who along with drummer Lucas Keen were members of Rise Kagona’s (Bhundu Boys) Jit Jive Band. Currently working on the follow up to Five Notes, the band will be sharing as yet unreleased music at this Woodburner session.
